On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was recognized. It involved thousands of people in the U.S rallying in celebration of the planet and peacefully demonstrating their frustration over pollution. This prompted U.S. lawmakers to pass the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. It also proved that we have voices and it’s up to us to use them! Today over 500 million people in 175 countries participate in Earth Day. Here are some examples of what’s happening around the world…

Thailand – more than 100,000 Buddhist monks will gather north of Bangkok in mass meditation.

Monaco – a 2.5 Km open swim will take place in the Mediterranean to raise money for environmental causes.

Spain – a two-day outdoor celebration featuring dancing, singing, music and eco-friendly products and discussions will take place.

Costa Rica – a movement called “Twearth” (Twitter and Earth) will allow people to keep up with Earth Day activities in the jungles – every moment of the day.

Canada – parks, businesses, schools and communities are putting on events and festivals all week to get people motivated to think environmentally all year.
